Working towards a workshop – terminology

I am trying to tighten my use of specific words for the workshop. Here is my a selection of my first cut:

  • Ethical investing – investment decisions based on a moral obligation in the philosophical context (not a value judgement)
  • Capital markets – broad collection of venues and organizations where entities can secure capital (debt or equity) and where investors gather to bid for investment opportunities
  • Impact investing – investing with intentionality (i.e. does the investment intend to create social and environmental impact from the beginning?) and materiality (i.e. does the social and environmental impact materially affect the financial return either positively or negatively?).
  • Investors – individuals or organisations seeking to generate a range of different returns on their assets
  • Returns – explicitly financial returns but includes other returns (environmental or social) whether they are noted or not
  • Sustainability –  the relentless pursuit of material progress towards a more regenerative and inclusive society (hat tip to Erika Karp and Cornerstone Capital)
